Often, the dental professional who performs oral rehabilitation procedures with implants is faced with problems and complications in the prostheses placed on them. There is a paucity of controlled clinical studies that compare the various occlusal theories of published implants. Based on this gap, the objective of this study is to review the current concepts present in the literature on the fundamentals of occlusion applied to implant dentistry. In addition, the study discusses the biomechanical aspects involved, providing useful clinical guidelines for the formulation of therapeutic protocols for different models of implant prostheses, with the aim of promoting the longevity of these prostheses.
