Since 1893, intermaxillary elastics have become a fundamental tool in orthodontic treatments. It is a versatile and undeniably useful tool, however, proper planning is of paramount importance in order to be successful in its use. Several types of orthodontic elastics are available in the market, in different sizes, colors and resistances. However, a more efficient internal movement force can only be obtained if the practitioner considers physical and mechanical principles and selects elastics based on them. Thus, this work aims to direct orthodontic treatments to the choice of the most appropriate type of orthodontic elastic for each case, in order to achieve the best and most satisfactory results in their patients.
