Tooth extraction for orthodontic purposes has been a controversial subject in orthodontics for many years. Currently, the criterion for determining the choice of treatment protocol goes far beyond the study of tooth models and positions. The aim of this study was to analyze the positive and negative aspects of different treatments for Angle Class I malocclusion in adult patients who underwent orthodontic treatment. The study was developed from a search in the Medline, SciELO, and PubMed databases, and selected articles published in the last 10 years that addressed orthodontic treatments with and without tooth extraction. It was concluded that all alternatives have positive and negative points, and the best treatment plan will depend on the individual characteristics of each patient, always evaluating the predilection of the professional and the patient according to the available treatments.
