Abstract

Maxillary atresia is a problem found very frequently in the population. Among the options for the treatment and correction of this atresia, we have rapid expansion of the maxilla, which consists of bone correction in the transverse direction. To obtain a good expansion of the jaw, it is necessary to disjunct (break) the median palatal suture using orthopedic devices, which perform this work, including the Hyrax breaker. The present work aims to report a literature review on the Hyrax circuit breaker, its benefits, indications and contraindications. The Hyrax type circuit breaker was introduced by Biederman. This device is tooth-supported and constructed with rigid wires. The expansion screw is placed as close as possible to the palate, so that the force approaches the center of resistance of the maxilla, and fixed with bands. The Hyrax type breaker facilitates cleaning, without causing tissue irritation due to the interposition of food between the palate and the acrylic. Rapid expansion of the maxilla through the correct and supervised use of the Hyrax breaker, when indicated at the right time, with the patient's collaboration to carry out the activations, is an excellent alternative in the treatment of posterior bilateral crossbite, resulting in significant improvement both bone and functional, as well as dental and aesthetic, preventing future problems in chewing function.
