Abstract

Of this work was to carry out a literature review to understand the effects of traction-related root resorption of impacted teeth. The design chosen was a narrative literature review. The search for articles was performed digitally, in the Virtual Health Library, Scientific Electronic Library Online and Google Scholar databases, using the following descriptors: root reabsorption; orthodontics, corrective, corrective/adverse effects. Publications related to the objectives listed in this research, articles in Portuguese or English, available in full text, were included. Duplicate articles were excluded. The initial search revealed 248 articles, after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 19 publications were included. Root resorption was associated with several risk factors related to orthodontic treatment during tooth movements so necessary for treatment. The risk factors identified as inherent to the patient were: genetic susceptibility, some systemic diseases, abnormalities in root morphology, dental trauma, use of medications and endodontically treated teeth. A thorough anamnesis combined with a complete clinical and radiographic examination of the structures of interest can detect the presence of resorptions prior to orthodontic treatment, as well as prevent the advancement of those that are already installed.
