Abstract

Proper occlusion depends on a balanced transverse relationship between the maxilla and mandible. Transverse maxillary deficiency is a condition that causes the upper jaw to narrow, affecting masticatory function and facial aesthetics. Its causes include genetic factors, respiratory factors (such as mouth breathing) and changes in craniofacial growth. Traditionally, adults with this condition were treated with Surgically Assisted Rapid Maxillary Expansion (SARME). However, the MARPE (Skeletally Anchored Rapid Maxillary Expansion) technique has emerged as an innovative alternative, using mini-implants to promote maxillary expansion in a less invasive manner. Diagnosis is made through clinical evaluation and imaging tests, which help determine the severity of the condition. Treatment, especially in adults, involves techniques such as SARME or MARPE, the latter being a more effective approach with faster recovery. The MARPE technique has shown promise in the correction of transverse maxillary deficiency in adult patients, offering a less invasive and effective solution to the problem. This paper aims to discuss, through a literature review, the theme "MARPE: an alternative for rapid maxillary expansion", exploring its applications, advantages and clinical considerations for patients in general, in addition to analyzing its effectiveness in rapid maxillary expansion.
