Abstract

The success rate of dental implants is high and they are the best option for treating edentulism. However, many procedures are complex, requiring good preoperative planning and good knowledge and technical preparation on the part of the implantologist. Migration of the dental implant to the maxillary sinus can happen accidentally during surgery or as a postoperative complication. These occurrences have been increasing due to poor case planning, or the lack thereof, and lack of specialized knowledge and technique, leading to permanent health problems for the patient. The posterior region of the maxilla has anatomical peculiarities that facilitate these intraoperative complications. An investigative anamnesis, cooperation from the patient in providing truthful information about their current and past health problems, as well as strict adherence to postoperative care are also extremely important for the success of the treatment. This article describes a case of removal of a dental implant that migrated to the maxillary sinus, using the Caldwell-Luc technique.
