The objective of this literature review was to describe the advantages of the maxillary disjunction technique in adult patients with maxillary transverse deficiency, through the use of the MARPE (Mini-Implant Assisted Rapid Palatal Expander) skeletal anchorage disjunction. The chosen design was a narrative literature review. The search for articles was carried out digitally, in the Virtual Health Library, LILACS, BBO, Google Scholar databases, using the following descriptors: maxillary expansion, palatal expansion technique, crossbite and mini-dental implants. Publications related to the objectives listed in this research were included, articles in Portuguese, English or Spanish, published in the last 10 years, available in full text. Duplicate articles are excluded. According to the analysis of the reviewed literature, the studies proved the effectiveness of MARPE in opening the palatal suture. Through this technique, numerous occlusal and respiratory benefits were obtained after the procedure, guaranteeing a better quality of life for the individual. MARPE stood out as an effective treatment option for maxillary transverse deficiency, enhancing the orthopedic effect of disjunction, increasing expansion stability and minimizing unwanted effects.
