Abstract

Orthodontic retention is essential for maintaining the stability of results after corrective treatment, preventing dental relapse. This literature review aims to highlight the most commonly used types of retainers by orthodontists, as well as their advantages and limitations. There are two main types of retainers: fixed and removable. Fixed retainers, such as the 3X3, are bonded to the teeth, ensuring continuous stability but may promote biofilm accumulation and periodontal complications. Removable retainers, such as the Hawley plate and thermo-plasticized models, offer greater versatility and aesthetics but require higher patient compliance. The choice of retainer type should be individualized, considering factors such as patient habits, type of malocclusion, and risk of relapse.
