Interproximal reduction is a widely used conservative technique in orthodontics to correct dental crowding and create space within the dental arches without the need for extractions. It involves the controlled removal of enamel in the interproximal areas, allowing for effective and aesthetically pleasing dental alignment. Its safety and effectiveness depend on careful planning and proper technical execution. Although the procedure may initially increase enamel roughness and expose enamel prisms, certain measures can be taken to minimize sensitivity caused by the reduction. This technique is particularly indicated for cases of mild crowding and space discrepancies, making it a minimally invasive and efficient alternative to improve dental alignment and aesthetics. Interproximal reduction is an essential tool in contemporary orthodontic practice, providing both aesthetic and functional benefits without compromising dental health. Therefore, this article aims to analyze and discuss interproximal reduction as an effective and conservative alternative to tooth extraction in cases of mild to moderate crowding.
