Abstract

Knowledge of dental occlusion is essential for the correct completion of successful orthodontic treatment. A balanced occlusion consists of the coincidence of the centric relationship with the maximum habitual intercuspation and the presence of functional excursive movements free from interference in both laterality and mandibular protrusion. The professional orthodontist needs to be aware of the conditions of a functional occlusion, in order to end treatment with adequate stability, seeking a minimum of relapses and/or occlusal problems that may occur after removal of the orthodontic appliance. Occlusal adjustment must be carried out carefully so as not to cause harm to the patient. This adjustment is an indispensable procedure in all specialties of Dentistry, after all, correct occlusion is the goal of any dental treatment. The aim of this study is to highlight the main aspects of dental occlusion and their relationship with orthodontic finalization.
