Abstract

Smoking is widely recognized as a significant risk factor for various systemic and oral conditions, negatively impacting peri-implant health and dental implant success. This literature review aimed to analyze the effects of smoking on peri-implant health, emphasizing complications associated with peri-implantitis and implant failures. Studies show that the toxins present in tobacco impair osseointegration, increase inflammation in peri-implant tissues, and raise the risk of dental implant failure. Furthermore, smoking negatively affects the immune response and healing process, making smokers more susceptible to postoperative complications and implant loss. Smoking cessation is essential for promoting oral health and ensuring the success of rehabilitative treatments with dental implants.
