Abstract

With population growth, technological development, and increased violence, legal expertise has become increasingly necessary, requiring specific training professionals with extensive technical-scientific knowledge. The present study reports, through a review of the literature, a regulation on legal dentistry and the areas of practice of the odontolegist. Several events occurring in the world and in Brazil require a performance of the specialist in legal dentistry for elucidation of cases and human identification, evidencing the importance of the professional. In the last century accident involving large numbers of people in extreme conditions such as fires, explosions have become a more complex identification, requiring a use of new technologies, and with this evolution in the complexity of cases occur by demand by professionals and capabilities has had a considerable increase.
