With the great demand for dental implants, the concern of dentists about the drugs ingested, especially bisphosphonates, has increased. This study aims to quickly and practically update dental surgeons about bisphosphonates and the risk of osteonecrosis. A search was performed in the PubMED and SciELO databases using the keywords “bisphosphonates”, “dental implants” and “osteonecrosis”. It is concluded that there is still a need for several studies on the subject for a correct conduct of the dental surgeon and that at the present time, it is recommended a “drug holliday” of 3 months pre and postoperatively and request a CTX exam in fast for decrease the risk of osteonecrosis.
