Abstract

Orthodontic treatment in adults is often difficult due to maxillary atresia, so rapid maxillary expansion may be a treatment option in these cases. To carry out a literature review on surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion. Rapid maxillary expansion is efficient and necessary in cases of crossbites and atretic maxillae in adults, who already have calcification of the midpalatal suture. The opening of the midpalatal suture occurs more easily in the growth phase of individuals, gradually becoming more difficult with increasing age. Rapid maxillary expansion is a successful alternative, improving maxillary atresia, the conformation of the dental arch and the consequent function and aesthetics of patients. Surgically assisted maxillary disjunction is effective in cases of complete fusion of the midpalatal suture in adult patients.
