To carry out a literature review to discuss the effects of orthodontic treatment on the periodontal health of patients. Systematized literature review. The search for articles was carried out digitally, in the Virtual Health Library, Scientific Electronic Library Online and Google Scholar databases. Articles in Portuguese or English that were published in the last 17 years and were available in full text were included. 12 articles met the systematization criteria and were included in this review. Of these, only 2 were systematic reviews, the others were clinical intervention studies, cross-sectional and retrospective studies. The main findings reported in the literature were that the various orthodontic treatments result in unwanted periodontal effects, however, if the treatment is well planned, and has multidisciplinary follow-up, orthodontist and periodontist, the effects are predictable and easily treated. Guidelines on hygiene and nutrition are also necessary. When orthodontic treatment is well planned and the patient has adequate monitoring of their periodontal health, orthodontics does not represent risks to the periodontium, on the contrary, it contributes to the improvement of their health.
