To carry out a literature review on the main solutions for orthodontic anchorage in patients with tooth loss, specifically extraalveolar anchorage methods and mechanics of orthodontic movements related to such cases were pointed out and discussed. This was a narrative-type literature review. The search for articles was carried out digitally, in the Virtual Health Library databases, using the following descriptors: extra-alveolar anchorage; tooth movement techniques; orthodontic anchoring procedures; tooth loss; orthodontic anchorage. Publications related to the objectives listed in this research were included, articles in portuguese or english, published in the last 10 years, available in full text. Duplicate articles were excluded. According to the analysis of the reviewed literature, it was possible to understand that the extra-alveolar anchorage is a resource that can be useful for disinclining, distalizing, intruding posterior teeth, correcting occlusal plane asymmetries and midline deviation. Cases of anchorage for cantilever use with a view to canine traction and preparation for orthognathic surgery have also been reported. Extra-alveolar anchorage was cited as a means of excellence in mechanics and orthodontic practice, bringing excellent results in several cases, especially for patients who lost teeth.
