The use of an anchorage device in orthodontics is not recent, with the first studies published in 1945, however, it was only from the 1960s onwards that this technique had a greater focus of research, evolving these devices to the mini-implants currently used. This study aims to elucidate the main areas of use of mini-implants and the challenges that professionals face in installing these devices. Using a digital database, we carried out a thorough literature review. Among the studies found, we noticed that there is an alignment between the authors regarding the best areas to be used as well as the complications that may occur and the prevention of these complications. It is of fundamental importance that the dental surgeon knows the main areas of mini-implant installation as well as the complications it can generate and how to prevent and trea these complications.
