Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory process, with the microbiota and biomechanical factors associated with overload at the implant site as its main etiologic factors, which affect the soft and hard tissues around the osseointegrated dental implant in function, resulting in bone loss. support, representing one of the main causes of failure in oral rehabilitation with dental implants. Elimination of biofilm is the main goal of treatment, however, an acceptable cleaning technique must be able to debride and detoxify the surface without traumatizing it. Peri-implantitis treatment includes mechanical debridement, oral hygiene instruction, occlusal adjustment, use of antimicrobials, resective and regenerative therapies. However, there is no consensus or standardized protocols for the treatment of peri-implantitis. Therefore, the objective of this review is to evaluate the published scientific evidence on the effectiveness of decontaminating the surface of dental implants with different chemical methods as adjuncts to physical methods in non-surgical/surgical treatments of peri-implantitis.
