When talking about orthodontics in childhood, many terms and concepts are confused, generating doubts in professionals, patients and guardians about the correct treatment for each case. Interceptive orthodontics, preventive orthodontics and corrective orthodontics are the main issues that must be understood by the dental surgeon who intends to work in this area. The interceptive orthodontic is linked to paralyzing the malocclusion as soon as it is diagnosed. The preventive orthodontic is the one that will work preventing the development of malocclusion and the corrective orthodontic is used to correct an existing malocclusion. The most important part of a functional orthodontic and orthopedic treatment is the correct diagnosis, because it is from this that the professional decides the best treatment option. During deciduous, mixed or young permanent dentition, preventive or interceptive orthodontics can be used. Based on a systematic literature review, the objective of this work is to differentiate preventive and interceptive orthodontics, addressing the concept, indication and limitation of their use to facilitate the day to day in the office.
